Émile Cohl (January 4, 1857 – January 20, 1938), born Émile Eugène Jean Louis Courtet, was a French caricaturist of the largely-forgotten Incoherent Movement, cartoonist, and animator, called "The Father of the Animated Cartoon" and "The Oldest Parisian".

Cohl made "Fantasmagorie" from February to May or June 1908. This is considered the first fully animated film ever made. It was made up of 700 drawings, each of which was double-exposed, leading to a running time of almost two minutes.
For the first time, Cohl used découpé paper in his film Les 12 travaux d'Hercule, in 1910.

The rally of the 12 labours of Hercules was born in 1968 from a group of friends who wanted to organize an event after the birth of the SAA AUGIAS in 1967. Initially, this rally was cartographique, with a route that participants had to realize with a fairly high hourly average. Such rallies included parts opened to traffic and other closed from 1 to 2 km.
This rally is located around Cherveux and le Chapelle Bâton, in the Deux-Sèvres département of western France.

The Twelve Tasks of Asterix (Les Douze travaux d'Astérix) is an animated feature film based on the Asterix comic book series. René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, the creators of the series, wrote the story and directed the film themselves; with co-direction by Pierre Watrin and the screenplay co-written by Pierre Tchernia, a friend of Goscinny and Uderzo.

After a group of legionaries is once again beaten up by the gauls, they imagine: "With such huge strength, they can't be human... they must be gods". Julius Caesar is informed, and laughs. He makes a decision with his council and goes to Armorica, to speak with Vitalstatistix. He gives the Gauls a series of 12 tasks, inspired by Hercules (but new ones, since the 12 Labours are outdated). Vitalstatistix assembles their best warriors, Asterix and Obelix, to do the job. The Roman Caius Tiddlus is sent along with them to guide them and check they complete each task.

Gibraltar has always had a strong connection with the myths of Hercules; one of his famous "Twelve Labors" describes how he erects two rock pillars, one in Europe, and one in Africa - hence the Rock of Gibraltar, now known as one of the "Pillars of Hercules". This mythological hero has been featured on Gibraltar's circulating 5 pound coinage since 1988 and was only introduced to the 2 pound coin with this series that was issued in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. These coins all include the new effigy of Her Magesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed and sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley F.R.B.S., F.S.N.A.D.
These 2 pound coins are all from Gibraltar, and are dated 1997, 1998 or 1999. These Uncirculated coins are made from "Bi-metal base metal", and appear two tone. The center section is the typical silver color of Copper-Nickel, and the outer ring is a gold tone.

Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835 – 16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor, and pianist, known especially for The Carnival of the Animals, Danse Macabre, Samson and Delilah, Havanaise, Introduction and Rondo capriccioso, and his Symphony No. 3 (Organ Symphony).
As a composer, Saint-Saëns was often criticized for his refusal to embrace romanticism and at the same time, rather paradoxically, for his adherence to the conventions of 19th-century musical language.
For the last of his symphonic poems, in 1877, Saint-Saëns returned to the legend of Hercules. Seneca’s Hercules furens is written on the model of Euripidean Heracles: the jealous Juno, working through Eurystheus, has imposed twelve mighty and destructive tasks on Hercules, her hated stepson. But these, even to the last and worst, the bringing of Cerberus to the upper world, he has triumphantly accomplished. Abandoning her plan of destroying him by tools like these, she will turn his hand against himself to accomplish his destruction. When he comes back from hell, she brings a madness on him, and so precipitates the tragedy which forms the action of the play. The hero kills his wife and children. When he is again conscious, he wants to commit suicide, but he changes idea and goes to Athens to purify himself.
Hercules’madness is an example of terribile horror. Seneca modifies the Euripidean model following a different interpretation of reality: human impotence in front of divine hostility is not enough to justify the loss of reason. Seneca goes further and finds it in the complex personality of Hercules, the real heart of madness.

You can admire this stater coin in the Archeological Museum of Naples. This silver stater coin is from the mint of Heraclia, dates in the Late Classical period, between 400 and 330 B.C., and presents Greek inscriptions. It shows the following imagines:
D/ ATHANAS; head of Athena with crested helmet, on which there is a depiction of Scylla throwing a rock with her left hand; R/ HERAKLEION; Hercules stands naked, with his lionskin on his head, fighting the lion Nemeus; in the background on the left is the god’s club and bow.
The mint of Heraclia is constantly identified by the types of Athena and Hercules, the hero of the city; the weight is that of the “nomos italiotikos" (= 7.76 grams) which, from the mid-fifth century B.C. onwards, characterised the issues of the Italiot cities. Silver coinage is recorded from the arrival of Pyrrus.

Heraclea ('Ηράκλεια in greek) was an ancient city of Magna Grecia, located near Policoro in Lucania, that takes its name from Herakles. It was founded by settlers from Tarentum and Thurii around 434 B.C. on a hill between the rivers Agri and Sinni on the ruins of the city of Siris, and in 374 BC was chosen as the capital of the Italiot League instead of Thurii that had fallen into the hands of the Lucanian. In 280 B.C. the city was the scene of the Battle of Heraclea between Rome and Tarentum. Always around 280 B.C. Heraclea became a confederate city of Rome. This is also the period of the tables of Heraclea, now preserved at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. They are bronze plates with texts in greek on the public and constitutional order of the city. On the back of these the Lex Iulia Municipalis is transcribed. At the end of the war between Rome and Tarentum, Heraclea fell under Roman control. In 212 B.C. the city was besieged and conquered by Hannibal. Later he became again a flourishing city and its inhabitants were described as Nobiles Homines by Cicero in Pro Archie, the defense of the poet Archie, a citizen of Heraclea. In 89 B.C. the inhabitants of Heraclea had Roman citizenship with Lex Plautia Papiria. During the Republican period, Heraclea was troubled by social unrest, with the passage of Spartacus in 72 B.C. The people then took refuge in the upper part of the city. In the imperial age its decline began. Today you can visit its ruins in the National Museum of Siritide in Policoro. You can see also the rests of the Temple of Athena and the Temple of Demeter. Remains of the ancient Acropolis were preserved. In the south and west part there are the necropolis.

Porto Ercole is a charming seaside resort situated on the promontori of the Argentario (Grosseto). The first inhabitants of Porto Ercole were fishermen and you can still see them repairing fishing nets. The heart of the town is collected inside the walls at the feet of the Spanish fortress. There are streets, squares that overlook the sea and steps that will lead you to the church and to the Spanish Rocca. The town has developed along the natural bay that forms the port: here you can instead take a walk along the seafront, where you can find bars and restaurants with terraces on the sea and shops. At the end of the promenade you can still observe the sites dedicated to the repair work on boats, and landing of fish from fishing vessels in return. The charm of Porto Ercole derives also from the impressive Spanish forts that were built in the sixteenth century. A curiosity to conclude: Michelangelo Merisi (Caravaggio) died in Porto Ercole in July 1610, in still mysterious circumstances.

Giovanni Francesco (Gianfrancesco) Susini (Florence c 1585 Florence – after 17 October 1653) was a Mannerist Florentine sculptor in bronze and marble, trained in the workshop of Giambologna.
He continued to work in Giambologna's style, and Susini's sculpture was already mistaken for that of his master by the end of the century. His uncle, Antonio Susini, was the principal bronze-caster of Giambologna, and the young Francesco received early training as a junior member of Giambologna's workshop.
Susini continued to operate the family bronze foundry. According to Baldinucci, Giovanni and Antonio Susini continued to use Giambologna's models after the elder master's death to cast finely finished bronze sculptures for discerning patrons.

Adventure n.1: (Marvel Treasury#24) - Hippolyta posed as an innocent woman who Hercules saved from being hit by a car. He accompanied her back to her apartment, which was actually one of Mt. Olympus' touchstones on Earth, and she revealed her true identity. Furious over his spurning of her love, she attacked and tried to kill him, her own strength greatly amplified by the Gauntlets of Ares. However, in the course of the battle, they collapsed some immense pillar. Hercules caught the pillar to save Hippolyta, but because of its magical ties to Olympus (or some other such plot device), he could not hurl it away. Hippolyta had merely to stand back and watch Hercules be crushed, but she couldn't do it. She added her strength to his (the Gauntlets' power was no help here) in tossing the pillar aside. Saying they made better friends than enemies, ercules offered her his hand in peace. Disgusted, she slapped it away, asking why she would want his hand when she couldn't have his heart. She told him she had repaid her debt to him for saving her life, but that some day she would have her revenge.

The Labours of Hercules is a short story collection written by Agatha Christie and first published in in the US by Dodd, Mead and Company in 1947 and in the UK by Collins Crime Club in September of the same year[3]. The US edition retailed at $2.50and the UK edition at eight shillings and sixpence (8/6).

It features Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and gives an account of twelve cases with which he intends to close his career as a private detective. His regular sidekicks (his secretary, Miss Lemon, and valet, Georges) make cameo appearances, as does Chief Inspector Japp. The stories were all first published in periodicals between 1939 and 1947.

In the Foreword to the volume, Poirot declares that he will carefully choose the cases in order to conform to the mythological sequence of the Twelve Labours of Hercules. In some cases (such as The Nemean Lion) the connection is a highly tenuous one, while in others the choice of case is more or less forced upon Poirot by circumstances. By the end, The Capture of Cerberus has events that correspond with the twelfth labour with almost self-satirical convenience.

Albrecht Dürer (May 21, 1471 – April 6, 1528)[1] was a German painter, printmaker and theorist from Nuremberg. His still-famous works include the Apocalypse woodcuts, Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513), Saint Jerome in his Study (1514) and Melencolia I (1514), which has been the subject of extensive analysis and interpretation. His watercolours mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his ambitious woodcuts revolutionized the potential of that medium. Dürer's introduction of classical motifs into Northern art, through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists, have secured his reputation as one of the most important figures of the Northern Renaissance. Hércules Club de Fútbol, S.A.D. is a Spanish football team formed in 1922, playing in 2008-09 in Segunda División. The team is based in the city of Alicante, in the autonomous community of Valencia, and holds home games at the Estadio José Rico Pérez, which seats 30,000 spectators.

Hércules was too a professional soccer team that played in San Salvador, El Salvador. Hércules was a powerhouse during the late 1920's and early 1930's, winning titles in 1927, 1928 and in the 1929-30, 1930-31, 1931-32, 1932-33, 1933-34 seasons. Although the Primera División de Fútbol Profesional in El Salvador didn't exist at that time, and the Salvadoran Sports Comission (Comisión Nacional de Educación Física) didn't conduct an official national tournament during those years, the championships they won are often considered the national titles.

Finally, the USV Hercules is one of the oldest clubs in the Netherlands. In 1882 Hercules is now a healthy and still growing sports with about 2500 members of tennis, football (futsal + field), badminton, cricket and goalbal to practice sports.

Strength athletics, more generally known as strongman competitions, is a sport which tests competitors' strength in a variety of different ways.

Normally, a strongman contest comprises six events, though at the top level of competition, seven or eight events may be held. Among the most common events are:

-Farmer's Walk - competitors race along a course while carrying a heavy weight in each hand. A variation is the Giant Farmer's Walk, with a much heavier weight carried over a shorter distance.

-Hercules Hold or Pillars of Hercules - contestants stand between two pillars, pivoted to fall outwards. The competitor must simply hold them up for as long as possible.

-Vehicle Pull - probably the most famous of all strongman events. The competitor pulls a vehicle from a stationary start, for a prescribed distance - fastest over the course wins. In smaller competitions the vehicle is usually a truck, however in major contests such as World's Strongest Man anything goes, including trains and aeroplanes.

-Atlas Stones - five stones of increasing weight are placed on top of podia at approximately head height. This used to form the climax of most strongman events but has been seen less in recent years.

-Refrigerator Carry - a staple of earlier WSM events that has made a comeback in recent years. The competitors carry two refrigerators, attached to an iron bar they hold on their shoulders, and walk it across the finish line as fast as they can.

-Carry and Drag - an object (usually a heavy anchor) is run across half of the course. The competitors then must attach it to a chain of almost equal weight and pull it across the rest of the course.

Hercules' Cave is underground domed spaces of Roman times placed in the city of Toledo (Spain), and located at San Ginés's alley.
According to the legend, Hercules built a bewitched palace near Toledo, constructed with jade and marble, and concealed in his interior the misfortunes that were threatening Spain. He put a padlock in the door and ordered that every new king should add one, since the threats would be fulfilled the day in which one of them was curious and was entering. According to the legend, Don Rodrigo was this king, and of the palace only there stays the current cave that would conceal wonderful treasures, among them the famous Table of Solomon.

In 1344 Alfonso X the Wise wrote the "Crónica Geral de Espanha". In this story we were talking about the myth of Hercules and Gedeom to Crunha and Badalhouce.

Badalhouce was known as the former Portuguese-Galician to the city of Badajoz. This chapter of the Chronicle is based in Roman mythology of Hercules. On the tenth of the labour, Hercules should look to the giant Gerión, killing him and stealing his cattle.

The chronicle tells us that Hercules cut the head to Gerión and placed it on top of a tower.
Then he gave the orders to populate that zone, drawing many people. The first person to arrive was a woman named Crunha, why Hercules was ordered to that city called Crunha (La Coruña).
After that, Hercules was at a place that came to be called in order of Hercules, Bailhos Doces (Sweet Dance, and later became Badalhouce).

The story of Hercules and Gerión tries to explain that the name of Badajoz (Bailhos Doces - Badalhouce - Badajoz) could come from a place to perform ritual dances.

The Farnese Hercules is an ancient sculpture, probably an enlarged copy made in the early third century AD by Glykon of an original of Lysippos or one of his circle, of the fourth century BC., made for the Baths of Caracalla in Rome (dedicated in 216 AD), where it was recovered in 1546.

The heroically-scaled Hercules is one of the most famous sculptures of Antiquity, and has fixed the image of the mythic hero in the European imagination. It quickly made its way into the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, grandson of Pope Paul III. Alessandro Farnese was well placed to form one of the greatest collections of classical sculpture that has been assembled since Antiquity.

Cancer the crab, plays a minor role in the Twelve Labors of Hercules. While Hercules was busy fighting the multi-headed monster, Hydra, the goddess Hera, who did not like Hercules, sent the Crab to distract him. Cancer grabbed onto the hero's toe with its claws, but barely breaking the rhythm of his great battle with Hydra, Hercules crushed the crab with his foot. Hera, grateful for the little crustacean's heroic but pitiful effort, gave it a place in the sky.

Doping Panda is a Japanese rock group. They are part of Sony Music Japan's gr8 records! division, which includes bands such as Orange Range, UVERworld and Boom Boom Satellites. They released their first album "Performation" in 2001, and a second "WE IN MUSIC" in 2004. In 2005, Doping Panda released two albums entitled "High Fidelity", and "High Pressure". After being received very well by the Japanese Rock scene, the group went on a series of tours throughout the country, releasing their 2006 album "Dandyism", along with the hit singles "Miracle" and "Can't Stop Me". Following up on their earlier successes, the band released their first DVD entitled "Live-Ism" in October of 2006.

He is known primarily for his religious paintings depicting monks, nuns, and martyrs, and for his still-lifes. Zurbarán gained the nickname Spanish Caravaggio, owing to the forceful, realistic use of chiaroscuro in which he excelled.

In the palace of Buenretiro, Madrid are four large canvases representing the Labours of Hercules, an unusual instance of non-Christian subjects from the hand of Zurbarán.

The Temple of Hercules Victor ('Hercules 'the Conqueror') or Hercules Olivarius is an ancient edifice located in the Forum Boarium in Rome. It is is a monopteros, a round temple of Greek 'peripteral' design (surrounded by colonnades on all sides). This layout caused it to be mistaken for a temple of Vesta.

Dating from the later second century BC, and perhaps erected by L. Mummius Achaicus, conqueror of the Achaeans and destroyer of Corinth, the temple is 14.8 m in diameter and consists of a circular cella within a concentric ring of 20 x 10.66 m tall Corinthian columns resting on a tuff foundation. These elements supported an architrave and roof which have disappeared.

The original wall of the cella, built of travertine and marble blocks, and nineteen of the originally twenty columns remain but the current tile roof was added later. Palladio suggested a dome, though this was apparently erroneous. The temple is the earliest surviving marble building in Rome.

Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maximianus Herculius (c. 250 – c. July 310), commonly referred to as Maximian, was Caesar (junior Roman Emperor) from July 285 and Augustus (senior Roman Emperor) from April 1, 286 to May 1, 305. He shared the latter title with his co-emperor and superior, Diocletian, whose political brain complemented Maximian's military brawn. Maximian established his residence at Trier but spent most of his time on campaign. In the late summer of 285, he suppressed rebels in Gaul known as the Bagaudae. From 285 to 288, he fought against Germanic tribes along the Rhine frontier. Together with Diocletian, he ran a scorched earth campaign deep into the territory of the Alamanni tribes in 288, temporarily relieving the Rhenish provinces from the threat of Germanic invasion.
Maximian Hercules defeated the mauri, to exterminate the pirates (earning the nickname of Hercules) and returned to Rome in 303 for victory with Diocletian.

Heracles or Hercules Furens (Greek: Ἡρακλής μαινόμενος / Hēraklēs Mainomenos) is a play by Euripides (c. 416 BC). While Heracles is in the underworld obtaining Cerberus for one of his labors, his father Amphitryon, wife Megara, and children are sentenced to death in Thebes, Greece by Lycus. Heracles arrives in time to save them, however the goddesses Iris and Madness (personified) cause him to kill his wife and children in a frenzy. It is the second of two surviving plays by Euripides where the family of Heracles are suppliants (the first being Heraclidae). It was first performed at the Great Dionysia festival and did not win any prize.

She is tormented by her thoughts: she has heard that Hercules has captured Iole, daughter of the King of Oechalia, and plans to keep her as a slave and concubine. Hercules has seduced her, and has sacked Oechalia and killed her father in order to win her. Dejanira, accustomed to her husband's infidelities, resents the prospect of the young rival. She remembers that the centaur Nessus, when he was mortally wounded by Hercules, gave her a garment which he assured her would restore her husband's love for her when he put it on. She sends it to him, but the robe is poisoned, and Hercules dies. In dying he orders his son Hyllus to marry Iole. Realizing what she has done, Dejanira goes mad with grief.

Temple of Heracles (Hercules) (510 B.C.)One of the most beautiful temples of antiquity , it is now reduced in poor ruins. But even so, the building, still visible from far away, is imposing and rises in the Valley of the Temples just like the symbol of the power and strength of Herakles, the national hero of Sicily and, in particular, Agrigento.

The wide rectangular platform, mounted on four steps, measures m.73,992 in length and 27,788 in width, a triple square that occupies a surface of .2.056,89 square meters. It was m. 16,264 high.

Out of 38 columns (6 on the front and 15 on the long sides counting the corner ones twice), only 9 stand out today. They were put back up in 1922, thanks to the English captain Alexander Hardcastle.

Chinese Hercules is a misleading international title clearly used in an attempt to tie the movie into the prolific European sword and sandal drive-in flicks of the 1960s. The craze was kicked off in 1958 when bodybuilder and former Mr. Universe Steve Reeves took on the role of the Greek hero Hercules in Le fatiche di Ercole (aka Hercules unchained).

The "Pillars of Hercules" (Latin, Columnae Herculis) was the phrase that was applied in Antiquity to the promontories that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. The northern Pillar is the Rock of Gibraltar in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. A corresponding North African peak not being predominant, the identity of the southern Pillar has been disputed through history, with the two most likely candidates being Monte Hacho in Ceuta and Jebel Musa in Morocco.

The Pillars appear as supporters of the coat of arms of Spain, originating from the famous impresa of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, King of Spain.
